Koi Pond versus Water Garden? It’s the first decision you need to make! The requirements for a water garden are very different than for a koi pond. Koi love to eat aquatic plants. Koi need a lot of space. Koi need lots of bio-filtration. If you love the idea of having a Koi pond, you need to maintain certain conditions to keep them alive and healthy.
What about maintenance? How much work is it? Like any landscaping, a water garden needs maintenance. If the water garden is constructed properly, this maintenance can be minimal. Do it wrong, and you’ve got a nightmare on your hands. It’s all in the planning.
How deep does the water have to be? The reason this is important is that most municipalities have ordinances governing swimming pools that kick in once you achieve a certain depth.
One factor is your site - if you’re in full sun, you may need more depth or risk having boiled fish. More water depth and volume help moderate full sun conditions. It also helps prevent complete freezes.
How much space do I need? We can design a water feature for the amount of space you want to dedicate to it within the limits of physical laws of the universe, i.e., you can’t put a 5 pound ham in a 3 pound sack.
