Fauna
As far as fish go, I can tell you that they are goldfish. I’ve also got what are purported to be fathead minnows. They were purchased by weight and are there for visual interest and insect control. And there is my frog friend (probably Rana clamitans melanota), and miscellaneous dragonflies, water striders, etc. We’ve got lots of birds of all sizes and varieties and several nesting pairs of yellow finch, cardinals (redbirds to Hoosiers), morning doves, nuthatches, sparrows, titmice, woodpeckers, mockingbirds, starlings, crows, and even an owl and an occasional red-tailed hawk.
7/26/01: Well, Linda broke down and bought two fantail goldfish individually. I suggested that they go in the upper pond since they were “uptown fish”. We also noticed that the minnows in the upper pond have spawned. “Minnows, the Next Generation.....” The frog has brought along his family. All in all, the ecology is filling in nicely. I’ve started moving water hyacinth and water lettuce to the upper pond. It is rapidly becoming a veggie filter. Hopefully the two fantails will like it. The next step is to start composting the stuff.
